Rookie Santino Ferrucci believes his Dale Coyne Racing team are in good shape for the start of the 2019 NTT IndyCar season after testing this week at the Circuit of the Americas.
The former Haas F1 development driver was completing his first pre-season test of 2019 alongside teammate Sebastien Bourdais. Ferrucci – who competed in 4 races for the team last season – posted lap times good enough to put him in the top 10 on both days of the official NTT IndyCar Series Spring Training.
But the American believes there is more to come from him and the team when they return to COTA next month for the inaugural IndyCar Classic on March 24.
“In the morning session, realistically we were P4”, explained the 20-year-old. “But a red flag came out right before we crossed the line. Luckily, we have the lap on data, but it didn’t show on the time sheets.”
Despite gaining confidence and valuable data from his test running, Ferrucci is aware of the challenge posed by the new IndyCar season and his relative inexperience: “There was a lot of learning to be done” remarked Ferrucci of the two-day test. “At the end of the last session, we thought we were kind of getting lost a little.”
The team bounced back however and Ferrucci was able to post the 9th fastest time in the final session with a 1:47.59, just under a second off the benchmark time of Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi.
Dale Coyne Racing will complete a final test day at Sebring International Raceway next month before heading to the season opening race in St. Petersburg. The 2019 NTT IndyCar Series gets underway on March 10 with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
