Wickens aiming for back-to-back podiums at Mid-Ohio

Robert Wickens believes he can be in contention for back-to-back podiums at this weekend’s Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio.

Following a 3rd place finish in his first Honda Indy Toronto earlier this month the Canadian heads to round 13 of the Verizon IndyCar Series full of confidence.

“I think our team is building a lot of momentum”, said Wickens ahead of this weekend’s race. “We’re coming off of three consecutive top-five finishes, as well as back-to-back races in Iowa and Toronto where there was a very strong chance that we could have had both cars on the podium in both races.”

Wickens confident after Mid-Ohio test

Prior to Toronto, Wickens had piloted his Lucas Oil sponsored Honda to back-to-back 5th place finishes at Road America and Iowa. Now the 29-year-old – who leads the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings by a massive 148 points over Zach Veach – is looking to add to his tally of 3 podium finishes.

A successful test at the 2.258-mile road course last week has buoyed Wickens and the Schmidt Peterson (SPM) team. Following the highs of Wickens’ sensational series debut in St Petersburg and the lows of teammate James Hinchcliffe’s failure to make the field for the 2018 Indy 500, the SPM squad has hit a rich vein of form.

Wickens optimistic for Honda Indy 200

“I think it’s a good time of year for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. We just finished testing at Mid-Ohio the Tuesday after Toronto, and it was a fairly productive test day for the Lucas Oil crew”, remarked Wickens who sits 6th in the overall IndyCar point standings. “I’m optimistic that we can hopefully have another strong weekend.”
