Alonso aiming for Indy 500 return in 2019

F1 star Fernando Alonso is aiming to continue his bid for the motorsport ‘triple crown’ with a return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May 2019.

Alonso is trying to emulate Graham Hill in becoming only the second driver to complete a hat trick of wins at the Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours. The two-time Monaco winner participated in the 2017 Indianapolis 500 but failed to win the legendary event.

The double F1 World Champion is currently participating in IMSA’s ‘Roar before the 24’ event at Daytona. The Spaniard will pilot a United Autosports Ligier prototype in the Daytona 24 Hours later this month in preparation for an assault on this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours with Toyota.

Alonso still committed to the ‘triple crown’ dream

Speaking to ESPN F1, Alonso elaborated on his plans for 2018 and beyond the quest to win the triple crown.

“Doing this race is some kind of first step in endurance championship, how these races are and how much I enjoy these races,” explained the 36 year old after running practice laps at Daytona.

“After the Daytona 24 Hours, I will have a better understanding of these championships and the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Triple Crown is another target. So if I can fit in the Le Mans 24 Hours this year that I’m not doing the Indy 500, that will be great and hopefully the following year the Indy 500 can be in the plan again.”

Alonso participated in the 2017 Indy 500 with Andretti Autosport, taking the Rookie of the Year Award and leading 27 laps.
